Bush Tucker Honey Ant and Coolamon Set
    Product Code: 02577
    Price $32.89 $29.90

Australian Aboriginals have eaten native animal and plant foods for an estimated 60,000 years. Our Bush Tucker range celebrates this cultural knowledge and traditions by allowing Educators to quickly incorporate traditional bush foods into their curriculum. Found in Australia’s arid or semi-arid environments the honey ants are ants that have swollen abdomens full of sweet honeydew. Traditionally gathered by women from nests found under shrubs or trees and collected in coolamons, the honey is sucked from the abdomen taking care not to kill or hurt the ant (whilst not getting bitten) allowing the ants to continue making more honey.

  24. Fish Trap Play Set
    Fish Trap Play Set
    Product Code: 02578
    Price $109.89 $99.90

This playset is a combination of indigenous Australian traditional fishing practices and can be used in a variety ways. Menang Nyungar fish traps have been used in Oyster Harbour WA for up to 6500 years. These fish traps are a circular rock formation that water covers in high tide allowing fish to enter into the rock trap. As the tide goes out larger fish are caught inside the rocks whilst smaller fish escape ensuring sustainable fishing practices. The woven fish trap is used in river systems by placing the trap in between a barrier only allowing fish or eels to enter the trap where they cannot get out these traps are then used to carry the fish to the campground. Elder Collard's fishing stories and encouragement to have a story from Albany inspired this set. Len Collard is a Whadjuk Nyungar elder and a respected Traditional Owner of the Perth Metropolitan area and surrounding lands, rivers, swamps ocean and it's culture.
